Netadmin introduces data retention directive system support
As part of combating terrorism and serious crime, the European Parliament adopted the so-called data retention directive (2006/24/EC) two years ago, forcing telephone operators and broadband network owners to store information on telephone and internet traffic in their networks for up to two years. According to the controversial directive, each member state is to implement legislation on the topic no later than 2009.

Denmark became the first country to legislate in September 2007, while other EU countries, including Sweden, are expected to create new laws or modify existing ones during 2009.

Netadmin Systems is a Swedish company that develops software to automate operation and business processes in citywide and residential broadband networks. The company is the Nordic market leader and is currently in a phase of international expansion. Following demands from Danish customers, Netadmin has developed a module to log traffic information in a way that meets the requirements of both police authorities and the EU directive.

Telephone and internet service providers are obliged to store subscriber information once the directive is implemented. Data showing when, from where and to whom a phone call is made is to be stored, as are SMS and MMS messages. For internet traffic, ID information about the used computer or IP telephone will be saved, as well as the subscriber's IP address at every given time. E-mail service providers are also to store information on, amongst other things, senders and recipients of e-mails. For cell phones, geographic positioning information will also be stored. The actual contents of the calls or e-mails will, however, not be stored.

”Storage time and the exact types of data to be stored will vary between different countries, which is why we have developed a modular system that can be easily adapted to national differences in how the directive is applied,” said Anders Lindén, CEO of Netadmin Systems.
