Netadmin automates broadband networks on the Faroe Islands

Swedish company Netadmin Systems has struck a deal with Faroese Telecom, state-owned telephone operator on the Faroe Islands, concerning delivery and installation of NETadmin, a software which automates operation and business processes in citywide and residential broadband networks.

The Faroe Islands are a group of islands north of the British Isles. Together with Greenland, they’re part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The eighteen islands have approximately 48 000 inhabitants, of which 13 000 live in Torshavn, the capital; and 5 000 in Klaksvik, the second largest city on the Faroe Islands.

Faroese Telecom, with its 250 employees, operates an open ADSL and fibre-based broadband network covering all seventeen inhabited islands. The network has a capacity of 18 000 connections. The company also provides undersea cables that link Iceland, the Faroe Islands, the Shetland Islands, the Orkney Islands, and Scotland, as well as offshore platforms in the North Sea. “NETadmin lets us automate many of our processes which used to be manual,” said Dan Olsen, Chief of Communications at Faroese Telecom. “This not only saves us time but also reduces the effects of human factor errors.”

“At the same time, NETadmin will let us consolidate functionality, which in turn will make the system generally less complex and less expensive to maintain. Our network will also not be dependant on specific hardware manufacturers, and so we will be highly flexible when making future changes.”

“This is the first time our system will serve a whole country, albeit a small one. That doesn’t prevent Faroese Telecom from being an operator with high ambitions and on the leading edge of technology, not in the least in providing advanced services such as IPTV,” said Anders Lindén, CEO of Netadmin Systems.

Project management, delivery and continuous support will be handled by Netadmin’s Norwegian partner Cumulus; see www.cumulus.no

The NETadmin system has taken the market by storm. Netadmin has quickly become the Nordic market leader and holds a sixty percent market share in Sweden.

The fully automated system is very advantageous to end users and broadband network owners alike. Users can choose any number of desired broadband services through a portal and access them immediately. It is, for instance, possible to increase or decrease bandwidth, pick an Internet service provider, or temporarily order access to a certain TV channel. To the network owner, the system drastically reduces operation costs and/or lets existing staff handle multiple times the current amount of customers. It also allows for valuable flexibility when connecting new service providers and launching new services such as IP telephony and HDTV in the networks.
