The non-trivial discussion regarding network automation

So, your company has started discussing whether you should automate the provisioning of your broadband network or not. Investing in an OSS system is not trivial. It will add cost, and you already have personnel who can handle the configuration of broadband services manually, right? Well, the actual configuration is just one part of providing services to your broadband customers.

Inventory

To be able to provide the correct services to the right customer in a reliable and consistent way, you need to keep track of how your network devices are interconnected. But knowing how the network is set up isn't enough, you also need the customers contact information, along with address details. Perhaps the same customer has two different addresses where you need to provide broadband services? One may argue that customer address information has nothing to do with configuring services in a broadband network, it's just a matter of entering the correct commands in the right equipment. Correct, but how do you know which equipment to configure? You probably have the information stored in one or two separate systems, where you can lookup the information needed.

Netadmin Nine keeps all the information about the network inventory, along with all the connections between devices, ports addresses, and customers in one place. This enables Netadmin Nine to keep track of which customer belongs to which address, and which port in the access switch that address is connected to without the need of correlating information between separate systems.

Provisioning the network

So, what about the actual configuration of the network? Manual configuration of network equipment is not wrong, but there comes a time when it is no longer efficient. Manually configuring the network also mean that there's always a risk that something goes wrong. Entering a number wrong may give the customer a 10Mbps service instead of the 100Mbps service they are paying for, or a service that doesn't work at all.  Or even worse, the service is configured on the wrong network equipment.

Automatically provisioning services with Netadmin Nine will ensure that the services are always configured the same way, and the correct way. Since Netadmin Nine knows your inventory, all you need to do is select a customer and the desired service. Netadmin Nine will then find out which device that needs to be configured, and which commands to run, based on inventory data and defined provisioning flows. The only information you will ever need is the customer's name or SSN in order to provide them with broadband services in just a few seconds.

Monitoring

Another important part of providing broadband services is making sure that the services work. Netadmin Nine's built-in monitoring system monitors your devices, and will let you know which customers are affected, and which services doesn't work. Netadmin Nine can also notify your customers of affected issues.

Conclusion

Even though the investment in an OSS system is not trivial, the cost of manually configuring services in terms of labour and time will be more expensive in the long run, especially when you take customer satisfaction in to account.
