Our take on the flexible workspace

If you have spent any time on the Internet reading about what constitutes an attractive workplace or how to attract employees in the last 10 years, I’m sure you are well aware of the increasing demand for a flexible workplace.

A workplace where the employee can influence and control how, when and where the work is performed. This trend has increased even further with the introduction of the so called Millennials to the job market. When Wikipedia defines the term Millennials, a flexible workplace is one of the first and most important characteristics discussed.

As an employer of talented young professionals it is in our DNA to attract and retain skilled personnel. We invest heavily in the development of individuals that quickly become a part of an empowered and welded team of other skilled individuals. We are proud to have a very high staff retention due to the fact that we adapt to our personnel’s ever changing social life and use it to our benefit. So how do we meet the how, when and where of a flexible workplace?

Self-organization

Each engineering team at Netadmin Systems is highly empowered and work continuously on how to improve the processes, deliverables as well as improvement of the workplace itself. For us the business is dependent on- and thrive in the success of our engineers.

Flexible schedule

With self-organization as a tool individuals have freedom to decide when the job gets done. Our team spirit depends on a high mutual respect for each other which means that individual requests are always taken into consideration.

Telecommuting

Where the work is done varies from employee to employee and sometimes from day to day. Our HQ is located in Linköping but we also have a few other small offices. It is not uncommon to work from home one day, from our HQ the next, and then at one of our other offices the day after that. Our tools are always selected based on the need for mobility and access from other sites, e.g. video conferences and online collaboration tools.

Conclusion

Some of the challenges of the flexible workplace is how to build relationship between individuals and how to get that “We”-feeling. To enable this we work with online ceremonies (e.g. daily and demos) and we always encourage our employees to travel for face-to-face meetings. After all we are not a big anonymous bureaucracy made up by hierarchies, we are a small flat organization that is about seeing the individual and meeting the need for each and every one.

In the end we are only as successful as our employees. By empowering and building individuals we also build a company that can grow and retain personnel during the growth which is a critical building block when controlling costs and building success.
