Making fiber operations AI-operable
AI can help fiber operators answer questions and support operational tasks. But connecting AI to OSS/BSS requires more than access to data. It requires reliable context, validated actions and clear control over what an AI assistant is allowed to do.
Netadmin is developing an MCP-based AI service layer for Netadmin Nine. Built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), it exposes selected data and workflows as standardized tools that AI assistants can use. The aim is to move from isolated AI experiments to repeatable operational workflows, with governance and traceability built in.
Key features and enablers
-
Task-oriented tools: Package selected Netadmin Nine capabilities as reusable tools, reducing the need for bespoke integrations for each AI workflow.
-
Controlled execution: Apply permissions, validation and approvals where required, with an audit trail of actions.
-
Operational context: Ground questions and workflow steps in Netadmin Nine’s network, service and customer information.
-
Structured responses: Return relevant, structured information rather than large data dumps, helping limit unnecessary processing.
-
Choice of AI model: Support the operator’s choice of local or cloud-based language model through a consistent tool interface.
Initial focus areas
Business Reporting MCP — Help teams answer KPI questions and explore operational and commercial data through standardized reporting tools.
CRM MCP — Support address qualification, serviceability validation, customer creation and order initiation through controlled workflows.
NOC Assurance MCP — Support network diagnostics, incident investigation and guided remediation with traceability.
These focus areas allow us to develop and validate the approach through practical operator workflows before extending it to additional domains.
Connecting business intelligence and AI
The BI Data Warehouse project provides a dedicated reporting foundation with understandable data structures for reports and dashboards. Business Reporting MCP is being developed to make that reporting data accessible to AI assistants through governed tools.
The two initiatives address different parts of the same need: BI prepares data for reporting; Business Reporting MCP provides an AI interface to ask questions and explore it. CRM and NOC Assurance extend the wider MCP program to other operational workflows.
Development approach
MCP Services is a program in progress. Scope and timing are being shaped through early-adopter discussions and pilot workflows. The aim is to start with clearly defined tasks, validate their value and expand coverage based on operator needs.
